This photograph captures the Palais de l'Industrie, a structure erected for the Exposition Universelle of 1855 in Paris. Édouard Denis Baldus, a photographer commissioned by the French government to document major architectural projects, utilised the wet collodion process to record the building with precision. The image focuses on the central archway and the sculptural details that defined the facade, including the work of sculptor Charles Capellaro.

Baldus was known for his technical control, often combining multiple negatives to achieve balanced exposures across complex architectural subjects. In this print, the stone textures of the Palais are rendered with clarity, showing the neoclassical influence prevalent in mid-nineteenth-century French civic architecture. The composition emphasises the symmetry of the entrance, framed by columns and topped with allegorical figures.
