François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, produced this work in 1759. It depicts the Greek myth of the god Pan pursuing the nymph Syrinx. The narrative originates from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Syrinx flees from Pan, eventually transforming into river reeds to escape his advances. Boucher captures the moment of pursuit within a lush, shadowed riverbank setting.

The composition focuses on the contrast between the muscular, dark-toned form of Pan and the pale, luminous skin of the nymphs. Boucher employs a soft, painterly technique, prioritising fluid brushwork and a delicate handling of light. The figures are arranged in a serpentine curve, a common device in his work to guide the viewer's eye across the canvas. The inclusion of putti above the main figures adds a sense of playful artifice, typical of the period's interest in lighthearted mythological subjects.

Boucher's palette relies on earthy greens and deep shadows to frame the central figures, allowing the porcelain-like skin tones to emerge. The textures of the reeds, the water, and the drapery demonstrate his technical facility. This painting reflects the taste of the mid-eighteenth-century French court, which favoured decorative, sensuous, and theatrical interpretations of classical themes.
