Description
A 1975 collage by Cy Twombly, blending botanical illustration with gestural graphite marks and painterly smudges.
Cy Twombly, an American artist known for his gestural, calligraphic marks, created this work in 1975. The piece belongs to a series where Twombly combined found botanical imagery with his characteristic scribbled text and painterly smudges. The composition features a central collage element, a botanical illustration of Swiss chard, positioned above a sheet of paper bearing the handwritten word 'PAN'.
Twombly often engaged with classical mythology and literature, using language as a visual element rather than a purely linguistic one. The scrawled letters appear fragile, almost hesitant, contrasting with the precise, printed nature of the botanical specimen above. The lower portion of the paper contains a smear of reddish-brown pigment, which echoes the colour of the chard stems. This juxtaposition of the organic, scientific illustration with the raw, expressive mark-making is typical of Twombly's approach to the page. He treated the surface as a site for both intellectual reference and physical action.
The work avoids traditional narrative. Instead, it invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the name of the Greek deity Pan, associated with the wild and the natural world, and the literal, earthy representation of the vegetable. The paper itself shows signs of age and handling, which adds to the tactile quality of the composition. By incorporating disparate elements, Twombly creates a dialogue between the structured world of botanical classification and the chaotic, subjective nature of human expression. This print captures the nuances of the original collage, preserving the texture of the graphite lines and the depth of the oil paint application.
