Description

A detailed albumen silver print by Édouard Denis Baldus capturing the Cour Napoléon of the Louvre in Paris during the mid-nineteenth century.

This albumen silver print by Édouard Denis Baldus captures the Cour Napoléon of the Louvre in Paris during the mid-nineteenth century. Baldus, a photographer commissioned by the French government to document the expansion of the Louvre under Napoleon III, utilised large-format glass plate negatives to achieve this level of clarity. The composition provides a wide perspective of the architectural symmetry, showing the newly constructed wings that connected the Louvre to the Tuileries Palace.

Baldus was known for his technical precision and his ability to manage complex lighting conditions in architectural subjects. In this image, the long shadows cast across the courtyard define the depth of the space, while the crisp focus on the stone masonry reveals the ornate details of the Second Empire architecture. The photograph serves as a record of the urban transformation of Paris, documenting the scale of the construction projects that reshaped the city centre during this period. The absence of significant pedestrian traffic allows the viewer to focus entirely on the geometry of the buildings and the formal layout of the courtyard gardens.

As a practitioner of the wet collodion process, Baldus required long exposure times, which explains the stillness of the scene. His work is often associated with the 'Mission Héliographique', a project aimed at documenting historical monuments across France. This specific view reflects his expertise in capturing large-scale public works with a balanced, objective eye. The print retains the tonal range characteristic of high-quality nineteenth-century albumen processes, presenting a sepia-toned view that emphasises the texture of the stone and the atmospheric conditions of the day. This piece offers a glimpse into the architectural ambitions of the era, preserved through the lens of one of the most capable photographers of the time.
