Description
A precise architectural study of the Pavillon de Rohan at the Louvre, captured by Édouard Denis Baldus during the mid-nineteenth century.
This photograph captures the Pavillon de Rohan, a section of the Louvre palace complex in Paris. Édouard Denis Baldus, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century French photography, produced this image during a period of extensive renovation and expansion of the Louvre under Napoleon III. The composition focuses on the architectural geometry of the building, documenting the stone masonry, arched entryways, and the clock face set into the facade.
Baldus utilised the wet collodion process to achieve a high degree of clarity across the stone surfaces. The image displays the precise alignment of the structure, showing the shadows cast by the arches and the verticality of the central tower. By positioning his camera at a distance, Baldus provides a clear view of the building's proportions and the decorative carvings above the central window. The print reflects the technical rigour required for architectural documentation in the mid-nineteenth century, where the camera functioned as a tool for historical record.
The photograph is part of a larger series commissioned to document the transformation of the Louvre. Baldus was chosen for his ability to manage large-format negatives, which allowed for the capture of fine details in the stonework. The absence of human figures in the frame directs the viewer's attention entirely to the building's form and the play of light across its surfaces. This work remains a primary source for understanding the state of the Louvre during the Second Empire, providing a clear view of the architectural elements that define this Parisian landmark.
