Description
A classical allegorical engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting the figure of Peace with traditional iconography.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts the allegorical figure of Peace, or 'La Paix'. Audran, a member of a prominent family of French engravers, was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the works of masters into the medium of print. This particular work reflects the formal rigour of the French Baroque period, drawing heavily upon classical iconography.
The figure stands in a contrapposto pose, balanced upon a plinth inscribed with the title. She wears a chiton and a heavy, draped mantle, with a capital resting upon her head, suggesting an architectural or caryatid-like function. In her right hand, she holds a long staff, while her left hand supports a branch, likely olive, which serves as the traditional symbol of peace. The composition is clean and focused, prioritising the clarity of the figure against a neutral background.
Audran utilised fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the volume of the drapery and the subtle modelling of the face. The engraving demonstrates the disciplined approach to line work that defined the output of the Gobelins manufactory, where Audran worked under the patronage of Louis XIV. The print is part of a broader series of allegorical figures, reflecting the period's interest in classical themes and the systematic categorisation of virtues. The work is a fine example of seventeenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original design and the wider dissemination of classical motifs. The attention to the texture of the fabric and the structural integrity of the figure demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected of a printmaker of Audran's standing during the reign of the Sun King.
