This work by the Qing dynasty master Shitao demonstrates the synthesis of visual imagery and calligraphic expression characteristic of the Individualist school. Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, was a descendant of the Ming imperial family who sought refuge in monastic life following the fall of the Ming dynasty. His approach to painting prioritised personal spontaneity and the rejection of rigid academic conventions.

The composition features a flowering peach branch rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork. The ink washes vary in density, creating a sense of volume and movement within the petals and leaves. The application of soft pink pigment provides a subtle contrast to the monochrome ink of the branch and the surrounding text.
