Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, created this work on oilcloth, a material he frequently utilised due to its affordability and accessibility. His practice often involved painting directly onto black oilcloth, allowing the dark ground to serve as a natural backdrop for his subjects. This technique is visible here, where the deep, unpainted areas of the cloth define the surrounding environment, creating a stark contrast with the figures.

The composition features a father and son, rendered with the characteristic simplicity and directness associated with Pirosmani's output. The father, wearing a long dark coat and a traditional hat, holds a clay vessel, while the son looks up toward him. Their forms are simplified, lacking traditional academic perspective, yet they possess a distinct presence. Pirosmani spent much of his life in Tiflis, working as a sign painter for local taverns and shops.
