This print, titled Pembury Mill, Kent, is a fine example of the collaborative work between J.M.W. Turner and the engraver Charles Turner. Published in 1808, it belongs to the Liber Studiorum, a collection intended to demonstrate the breadth of J.M.W. Turner's capabilities across various subjects. While J.M.W. Turner provided the initial drawings and etchings, Charles Turner executed the mezzotint work, creating the atmospheric tonal range that defines the composition.

The scene depicts the exterior of a rural mill. A miller stands within the open doorway, illuminated by a shaft of light that cuts through the interior gloom. Outside, a dog rests near the threshold, while a horse-drawn cart is positioned to the right, suggesting the daily rhythm of agricultural labour. The mill wheel is partially visible on the left, surrounded by foliage. The texture of the timber walls and the thatched roof are rendered with precision, reflecting the technical skill required for mezzotint engraving.

Charles Turner was a master of this medium, capable of producing subtle gradations from deep black to bright white. This print captures the quiet, domestic nature of the English countryside during the early nineteenth century.
