The composition is characteristic of sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, where the narrative action is placed within a highly structured, architectural setting. In the foreground, Hades seizes Persephone, who reaches out in distress as they prepare to descend into the underworld. The scene is framed by classical ruins and a formalised garden, which contrast with the more fluid, dramatic movement of the figures.

De Jode employs a precise, linear technique common to the period, using cross-hatching to define the shadows and textures of the stone masonry and the drapery of the figures. The background features a distant city and a calm body of water, providing a sense of depth that draws the eye across the scene. Above, a small figure of Cupid or a similar deity flies through the clouds, observing the event. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, identifying the figures and the moment of the abduction.

As a publisher and engraver based in Antwerp, de Jode was central to the dissemination of prints across Europe.
