Alexey Venetsianov, a figure known for his depictions of Russian peasant life, here turns his attention to the grand historical narrative of the Russian Empire. This work depicts Peter the Great at the site of the future St. Petersburg, surveying the marshy terrain of the Neva delta. The composition places the Tsar in a central, commanding position, dressed in his characteristic green coat, holding a compass and a map. He is accompanied by an aide, while other figures stand in the background, observing the desolate, untamed environment that would eventually become the imperial capital.

The painting reflects the nineteenth-century interest in national myth-making. Venetsianov employs a structured, academic approach to the figures, contrasting the refined attire of the Tsar and his companion with the raw, undeveloped wilderness surrounding them. The large, pale rock formation behind the figures serves as a visual anchor, drawing the eye toward the horizon where the Neva river meets the sky. The light is soft and diffused, typical of the artist's preference for naturalistic illumination, even within the context of a staged historical scene.

While Venetsianov is often associated with the 'Venetsianov School' and its focus on rural genre scenes, this work demonstrates his capability in the realm of state-commissioned historical art.
