This engraving by Theodoor Galle depicts three distinct episodes from the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The primary scene on the left shows the saint in his sickbed, recovering from his injuries sustained at the Battle of Pamplona. Saint Peter appears to him in a vision, bathed in celestial light, to restore his health. The composition uses a clear division of space, separating the intimate, domestic setting of the sickroom from the architectural gallery on the right.

The right side of the print features two smaller, framed vignettes. The central panel shows Ignatius in prayer, overcoming demonic temptations, while the final panel depicts a vision of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. These narrative sequences were common in hagiographic cycles of the period, intended to provide a visual biography for the faithful. Galle, a member of the prominent Antwerp printing family, employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of the bed curtains, the stone masonry, and the folds of the garments. The use of Latin captions at the base of the image provides context for each scene, identifying the specific moments of spiritual intervention in the life of the founder of the Jesuit order.

The work reflects the Counter-Reformation focus on the lives of saints and the power of divine intervention. The perspective is constructed with mathematical rigour, typical of early seventeenth-century Flemish printmaking. The contrast between the dark, shadowed interior and the radiant light surrounding the figures creates a sense of drama. This print serves as a record of the iconography associated with Ignatius, capturing the transition from his military life to his religious vocation through a series of miraculous encounters.
