Description
A woodblock print from the 1748 'Picture Book of Ogura Hill' by Nishikawa Sukenobu, featuring classical poetry paired with scenes of rural life.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Picture Book of Ogura Hill' (Ehon ogurayama), a publication by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Published in 1748, the work serves as an illustrated anthology of the Hyakunin Isshu, a classical collection of one hundred waka poems by one hundred poets. Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator during the mid-Edo period, known for his contributions to the development of the ehon, or picture book, format.
The composition displays two distinct scenes presented side by side, typical of the format found in Japanese book illustration of the eighteenth century. On the right, figures are depicted engaged in agricultural labour, specifically the processing of harvested crops, accompanied by calligraphic text that presents the poem. The left page shows a rural setting with figures traversing a path through fields, framed by trees and a small structure. The lines are thin and precise, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques employed to replicate the fluidity of brushwork.
Sukenobu focuses on the integration of text and image, where the calligraphy is as much a visual element as the figures themselves. The style avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a clear, narrative approach that documents the daily activities of the period. The work provides insight into the aesthetic priorities of the time, where literature and visual art functioned in tandem to preserve cultural heritage. By documenting both the poetic tradition and the rural life of the era, the print offers a view into the social and artistic climate of mid-eighteenth-century Japan. The monochromatic palette and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the technical control required for mass-produced printed media during this period.
