This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. These prints documented the arrival of foreign technology, trade, and customs in the port city of Yokohama following the opening of Japan to international commerce. The composition is divided into distinct panels, each presenting a different curiosity of Western life that fascinated the Japanese public at the time.

The upper panels feature women engaged with imported machinery, specifically a sewing machine and a laundry ringer. These depictions reflect the curiosity surrounding foreign domestic tools. The lower section displays a steam-powered vessel emitting thick smoke, a common subject in Yokohama-e that symbolised the rapid industrialisation and technological shifts occurring in the mid-nineteenth century. Beside the ship, a gas-style lamp post is illustrated, another piece of infrastructure that appeared alien to the traditional Japanese streetscape.

Yoshikazu uses a clear, graphic style typical of the period. The colours are applied in flat, bold blocks, and the outlines are precise.
