This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Pierre Surirey de Saint-Remy, a figure of note within the French military administration of the late seventeenth century. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of copperplate engraving. This work is based on an original painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, the pre-eminent portraitist of the era, whose style defined the visual language of the French court.
