José María Velasco remains one of the most significant figures in nineteenth-century Mexican art. His approach to the natural world combined rigorous scientific observation with a disciplined academic technique. This work depicts the ancient site of Teotihuacan, focusing on the two primary structures: the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Velasco captures the arid, rugged terrain of the Valley of Mexico with precision, documenting the vegetation and the geological features of the region.
