José María Velasco is recognised for his precise observation of the Mexican environment. While he is most associated with his expansive views of the Valley of Mexico, his smaller studies of individual trees, such as this depiction of a Pirú (Schinus molle), demonstrate his scientific approach to painting. The work captures the specific foliage and structure of the tree, which was introduced to Mexico and became a common feature in the local environment.

The composition centres on the tree, positioned against a rustic stone wall and a simple wooden door. Velasco employs a controlled palette to render the textures of the bark, the fine, drooping leaves, and the weathered masonry.
