This etching by the Dutch artist Willem Witsen captures a quiet scene within a kampong, or village, in Buitenzorg, known today as Bogor in Indonesia. Witsen, a central figure of the Tachtigers movement, is widely recognised for his atmospheric depictions of urban and rural environments. His work often focuses on the interplay of light and shadow, a quality clearly present in this study of a banana tree and traditional dwellings.
