Hubert Robert, a French painter and printmaker, spent over a decade in Rome during the mid-eighteenth century. This period proved formative for his artistic output, as he became fascinated by the juxtaposition of classical ruins and contemporary Italian life. The series Les Soirées de Rome captures this specific interest through a collection of etchings that explore the atmospheric quality of Roman sites.

These two plates, numbered VII and VIII, demonstrate Robert's skill in etching.
