A striking portrait of fellow Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim by Leonor Fini, featuring a bold, monochromatic orange-red background.
Leonor Fini, a self-taught artist associated with the Surrealist circle in Paris, painted this portrait of her contemporary, Meret Oppenheim, around 1939. The work captures Oppenheim, a fellow artist known for her own contributions to the movement, in a seated pose against a stark, monochromatic background. Fini employs a striking use of colour, placing the figure within a field of intense, saturated orange-red that flattens the pictorial space and draws focus entirely to the subject. Oppenheim is depicted with a direct, somewhat guarded gaze. Her dark, voluminous hair contrasts with the warmth of the background, while her attire—a muted green jacket over a dark bodice and black stockings—suggests a blend of bohemian and structured elements. Fini often explored themes of identity and the female persona in her work, frequently using her friends and peers as subjects. This portrait avoids the traditional conventions of the genre, opting instead for a psychological intensity that reflects the personal connection between the two women. Technically, the painting demonstrates Fini's interest in the tension between realism and the uncanny. The brushwork is controlled, yet the overall effect is one of deliberate artifice. The chair upon which Oppenheim sits is rendered with minimal detail, almost dissolving into the surrounding colour field. This approach allows the figure to occupy the space with a sense of isolation. Fini's work from this period often features such theatrical staging, where the subject appears as an actor in a private, dreamlike narrative. By stripping away extraneous environmental details, Fini forces the viewer to confront the subject's presence directly, unmediated by the typical markers of domestic or studio settings.
