Vasily Tropinin, a central figure in early nineteenth-century Russian portraiture, painted this intimate study of his wife, Anna Ivanovna Tropinina, around 1809. The work captures a domestic quietude, reflecting the artist's ability to render the character of his subjects with directness and technical precision. Tropinin, who spent much of his early life as a serf, developed a style that favoured naturalism over the rigid formality often found in the aristocratic portraiture of the period.

In this composition, Anna Ivanovna is depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. The lighting is focused on her face, drawing attention to her soft features and steady gaze. She wears a bonnet trimmed with delicate lace, a detail that allows the artist to demonstrate his skill in handling texture and light.
