A striking lithograph by Jean Charlot, featuring a monumental portrait rendered with sculptural depth and expressive, simplified forms.
This lithograph by Jean Charlot captures a figure with a focus on sculptural volume and monumental form. Charlot, a French-born artist who became a central figure in the Mexican Muralism movement, often drew inspiration from pre-Columbian art and the indigenous populations of Mexico. His approach to portraiture rejects conventional realism in favour of a simplified, heavy aesthetic that emphasises the physical presence of the subject. The composition is dominated by the subject's head, tilted upwards in a manner that suggests a sense of stoicism or quiet contemplation. Charlot employs dense cross-hatching and varied pressure to build up the shadows across the face, creating a sense of weight and mass. The features are rendered with deliberate economy: the eyes are almond-shaped and closed, the nose is broad, and the lips are full. These stylistic choices reflect the artist's interest in the aesthetic qualities of ancient stone carvings, which he studied extensively during his time in Mexico. By stripping away extraneous detail, Charlot directs the viewer's attention to the structural integrity of the face. The texture of the skin is suggested through the grain of the lithographic stone, providing a tactile quality to the print. The subject wears a simple garment, the folds of which are indicated by rhythmic, parallel lines that echo the contours of the neck and shoulders. This work demonstrates Charlot's technical proficiency in printmaking, a medium he utilised to disseminate his artistic vision to a wider audience. The print remains a clear example of his ability to merge modern European techniques with the visual traditions of his adopted home.
