The artist employs the meticulous oil technique for which the Early Netherlandish school is known, capturing the texture of the hair, the subtle modelling of the facial features, and the reflective quality of the jewelled collar.

The figure is set against a dark, neutral background, which serves to isolate the subject and draw attention to the expression. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions within the painted frame, such as 'Ihesus Via, Ihs Veritas, Ihesus Vita', reinforces the theological nature of the image.
