Vasily Tropinin, a former serf who gained his freedom and became a celebrated portraitist in nineteenth-century Russia, painted this group portrait in 1842. The composition depicts D. P. Voyeikov seated in a domestic interior, accompanied by his young daughter and their governess, Miss Sorock. Tropinin is recognised for his ability to capture the psychological state of his sitters, moving away from the rigid formality often associated with aristocratic portraiture of the period.

The scene is constructed with a focus on the interaction between the figures. Voyeikov occupies the centre, his expression contemplative, while the child looks towards him, creating a narrative link between the two. The governess stands slightly behind, providing a sense of structure to the family unit. The inclusion of a small horse figurine on the table adds a specific detail that suggests the personal interests of the child, grounding the portrait in a recognisable domestic reality.
