Description
A 1648 portrait engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicting David Nuyts, accompanied by an inscription detailing his charitable bequests.
This portrait of David Nuyts, executed by the Dutch engraver Jonas Suyderhoef in 1648, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century printmaking. Suyderhoef was a pupil of Pieter Soutman and became known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of copperplate engraving. The subject is depicted in a bust-length format, wearing the formal attire of a Dutch merchant or official, complete with a large, pleated ruff collar that frames his face. The lighting is directed to emphasise the textures of his clothing and the subtle modelling of his features.
Below the portrait, the composition includes a significant amount of text. This inscription details the charitable bequests made by Nuyts in his will, dated August 1631, to various cities and the Dutch East and West India Companies. The inclusion of these financial records transforms the print from a simple likeness into a commemorative document. It serves to record the civic contributions of the sitter, linking his personal identity to his public philanthropy. The typography and layout of the text are integrated into the overall design, balancing the visual weight of the portrait above.
Suyderhoef employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to create depth and shadow. The dark background ensures that the figure remains the primary focus, while the crisp lines of the ruff provide a contrast to the softer rendering of the face. This work is an example of how printmaking functioned as a medium for both portraiture and the dissemination of information during the Dutch Golden Age. It captures the social and economic climate of the period, where individual wealth was often tied to institutional support and public service.
