This portrait depicts Gilles Joye, a canon of Saint Donatian in Bruges and a noted musician. Painted by Hans Memling in 1472, the work follows the tradition of devotional portraiture common in the fifteenth-century Low Countries. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, his hands joined in prayer, suggesting a private act of piety. Memling employs a dark, neutral background that directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's facial features and the texture of his fur-lined garment.

The painting is notable for its trompe l'oeil frame, which is integrated into the composition itself. The upper and lower edges of this painted frame contain inscriptions: ANNO DOMINI 1472 at the top and ETATIS SVE 47 at the bottom, indicating the date of execution and the age of the sitter. A small coat of arms is visible on the left side of the frame, providing further identification of the individual. The precision of the brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the skin tones and the rings worn on the fingers, reflects the technical mastery associated with the Early Netherlandish school.

Memling, who was active in Bruges for much of his career, became known for his calm and balanced compositions.
