This portrait depicts Maria Portinari, born Maria Maddalena Baroncelli, the wife of the Italian banker Tommaso Portinari. Painted by Hans Memling around 1470, the work is part of a diptych that originally accompanied a portrait of her husband. Memling, a German-born painter who settled in Bruges, was a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition.
