A 1913 portrait by Suzanne Valadon depicting Marie Coca and her daughter in a domestic setting, rendered with firm lines and a clear, structured composition.
Suzanne Valadon, a former artist model who transitioned into a painter of significant technical ability, produced this portrait in 1913. The composition depicts Marie Coca, a woman with whom Valadon shared a close personal connection, seated alongside her young daughter. The figures occupy a domestic interior, anchored by a large, patterned armchair that provides a visual counterpoint to the solid, dark garments worn by the subjects.
Valadon employs a firm, clear line to define the forms of her sitters. Her approach to colour is deliberate, favouring a palette that balances the muted tones of the room with the stark contrast of the white blouse and dark skirts. The child, positioned at the feet of the adult, holds a small doll, a detail that adds a narrative element to the scene. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, reflecting the artist's interest in the structural qualities of the image rather than the illusion of three-dimensional depth.
This work demonstrates the artist's rejection of the soft, atmospheric techniques common in the period. Instead, she focuses on the physical presence of the individuals. The floorboards are rendered with simple, parallel strokes, leading the eye toward the centre of the composition. The inclusion of a small framed picture on the wall and a vase of flowers on the side table provides context to the domestic setting. Valadon's work is characterised by this directness and a lack of sentimentality, which distinguishes her from many of her contemporaries. Her training as a draughtsman is evident in the precision of the contours and the solid construction of the figures. This print captures the specific character of the sitters, offering a view into the private world of the artist and her circle in early twentieth-century Paris.
