Vladimir Borovikovsky, a master of Russian portraiture during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, painted this depiction of Prince Alexander Borisovich Kurakin between 1801 and 1802. The work captures the Prince in his capacity as a high-ranking diplomat and statesman, adorned in the ceremonial robes of the Order of Malta. Borovikovsky demonstrates his technical skill through the rendering of the heavy, lustrous fabric of the mantle, the metallic sheen of the embroidery, and the delicate textures of the lace.

The composition follows the conventions of formal state portraiture. The Prince stands with a composed expression, his hand resting upon a table that holds a document, suggesting his administrative duties. Behind him, a classical column and a draped curtain provide a sense of architectural weight, while a bust placed to the left introduces a classical reference common in the period. The lighting is managed to draw attention to the face and the intricate details of the regalia, creating a balance between the sitter's individual features and his public persona.

Borovikovsky was known for his ability to combine the formal requirements of the Russian court with a degree of psychological observation.
