Description

A refined mezzotint portrait of Hortense de Beauharnais, Queen of Holland, by the British artist Charles Howard Hodges.

This mezzotint by Charles Howard Hodges depicts Hortense de Beauharnais, the Queen of Holland and stepdaughter of Napoleon Bonaparte. Hodges, a British artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, became a favoured portraitist among the Dutch elite and the French-aligned court. His technical mastery of the mezzotint process allowed for the subtle tonal gradations visible in this print, which captures the soft texture of the subject's skin and the delicate sheen of her garments.

The portrait follows the conventions of early nineteenth-century European court portraiture. Hortense is shown in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed towards the viewer. She wears a high-waisted gown typical of the Empire style, accessorised with a simple pearl headband. The oval frame format, common in prints of this era, focuses attention on the sitter, while the draped fabric in the background provides a sense of depth and formality. The lighting is carefully managed to create a gentle contrast between the figure and the shadowed backdrop, a hallmark of Hodges's approach to printmaking.

As a record of the Napoleonic era in the Netherlands, this work documents the intersection of political power and artistic representation. Hodges was known for his ability to translate the nuances of oil painting into the medium of print, ensuring that the likenesses of prominent figures were accessible to a wider audience. This print reflects the refined aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising clarity of form and a balanced composition. The work remains a fine example of the portraiture traditions that defined the social and political circles of the early 1800s, demonstrating the skill of an artist who successfully navigated the changing cultural landscape of the time.
