Description
A 1597 engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry depicting the Flemish humanist Justus Lipsius, framed by decorative botanical motifs.
This engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry depicts the Flemish humanist and philologist Justus Lipsius. Produced in 1597, the work captures the subject at the age of fifty, as noted by the Latin inscription within the oval border. Lipsius is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a fur-trimmed garment and a ruff, holding a book that signifies his scholarly pursuits. The portrait is enclosed within an oval frame, which is decorated with botanical motifs, including insects and floral elements, characteristic of the period's interest in natural history and symbolic ornamentation.
De Bry, a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers, utilised precise line work to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the subtle modelling of his features. The composition is balanced by the architectural and decorative elements surrounding the central portrait. Below the oval, a cartouche contains a Latin couplet praising Lipsius, comparing his intellectual stature to that of Cicero. This print reflects the conventions of late sixteenth-century portraiture, where the sitter's identity is reinforced through both physical likeness and symbolic attributes of their profession. The clarity of the engraving technique allows for the fine details of the ruff and the individual hairs of the beard to remain legible, demonstrating the technical skill associated with the de Bry workshop. This piece provides a clear example of how printed portraits were used to disseminate the images of scholars and public figures across Europe during the Renaissance.
