This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, within an elaborate allegorical frame. Kilian, a master of the Augsburg school of printmaking, utilised the burin to create a highly structured composition that communicates the authority of the Habsburg dynasty. The central portrait shows the Emperor wearing a traditional ruff, surrounded by a circular inscription detailing his titles and domains.

The surrounding iconography is typical of seventeenth-century state portraiture. Flanking the central medallion are allegorical figures representing virtues, while the upper section features the imperial coat of arms surmounted by the crown. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a Latin inscription, providing a formal context for the image.
