Description
A refined 1848 lithograph portrait of Prince Kwasi Boachi by German artist Ludwig Theodor Zöllner, capturing the subject in formal nineteenth-century attire.
This lithograph by Ludwig Theodor Zöllner depicts Kwasi Boachi, a prince of the Ashanti Empire who was sent to the Netherlands for his education. The portrait captures the subject in a formal, mid-nineteenth-century European style, reflecting the social conventions of the period. Zöllner employs a refined technique, utilising subtle tonal gradations to model the features of the sitter and the texture of his attire. The composition is focused on the upper torso, with the subject turned slightly to the right, presenting a dignified and composed appearance.
Kwasi Boachi was a figure of historical interest, having been brought to the Netherlands as a child alongside his cousin, Kwame Poku, under the auspices of the Dutch government. He later trained as a mining engineer at the Royal Academy in Delft. This print, based on a drawing by C. Vogel, documents his presence in European society during the 1840s. The lithographic process allows for a soft, painterly quality, which Zöllner uses to create a sense of depth and realism. The attention to detail in the cravat and the structured lapels of the coat provides a clear view of the fashion of the era. The background remains minimal, ensuring that the viewer's attention stays fixed on the subject. This work is a representative example of the portraiture produced in the German-speaking regions during the mid-nineteenth century, where lithography became a popular medium for disseminating images of public figures and individuals of note. The print maintains a balance between technical precision and a naturalistic representation of the sitter, offering a clear visual record of Boachi during his time in Europe.
