A circular allegorical engraving by Theodor de Bry, depicting various vices and human follies through a dense arrangement of figures and creatures.
Theodor de Bry, a Flemish engraver and goldsmith, produced this circular engraving as a moralising allegory. The composition is structured around a central void, surrounded by a dense ring of figures and creatures that represent various vices and human failings. The work reflects the Northern Renaissance interest in didactic art, where visual imagery serves to instruct the viewer on the dangers of moral decay and pride.
De Bry employs a precise, disciplined line to render the figures, which include hybrid creatures, mythological beings, and human archetypes. The circular format, often associated with mirrors or decorative plates, suggests a cyclical nature to human folly. The surrounding text, written in a mix of Dutch and French, provides a commentary on the scenes depicted, reinforcing the theme of vanity. The engraving demonstrates the technical skill of the period, with fine hatching used to create depth and texture within the crowded, circular frame. The figures are arranged in a manner that encourages the viewer to rotate the image, examining each segment of the narrative individually. This piece is characteristic of de Bry's output, which frequently combined classical motifs with contemporary moral concerns. The work functions as a visual catalogue of human error, presented with the technical clarity expected of a master engraver of the late sixteenth century. The contrast between the dark, populated ring and the empty centre creates a visual tension, drawing the eye towards the periphery where the moral lessons are contained.
