Description
An architectural etching by Giovanni Battista Piranesi documenting the Doric columns of the Temple of Neptune at Paestum.
This etching is part of the series 'Différentes vues de quelques restes de trois grands édifices qui subsistent encore au milieu de l'ancienne ville de Pesto', published in 1778. Giovanni Battista Piranesi, a Venetian architect and printmaker, travelled to Paestum in the late 1770s to document the Greek ruins. His work captures the Doric order of the Temple of Neptune with technical precision, focusing on the massive scale of the columns and the weathered texture of the stone.
The composition employs a low vantage point, which emphasises the height of the columns and the weight of the architraves. Piranesi uses varied hatching techniques to create deep shadows, providing a sense of volume and physical presence to the ruins. Small figures are placed within the scene to provide a sense of scale, a common device in his architectural prints. These figures, often depicted in contemporary dress, contrast with the ancient, crumbling masonry, suggesting the passage of time and the persistence of these structures.
Piranesi was known for his interest in the structural integrity of ancient buildings. His documentation of Paestum provided European architects and scholars with a clearer understanding of Greek architecture, which was then gaining popularity over the Roman style. The etching displays the characteristic clarity of his line work, achieved through multiple biting stages on the copper plate. This print offers a view into the 18th-century fascination with antiquity, presenting the site not as a romanticised ruin, but as an object of rigorous study. The inclusion of labels and a descriptive caption at the base aligns with the scientific and archaeological spirit of the Enlightenment, documenting the specific architectural elements of the pronaos.
