Description

A late nineteenth-century albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei, documenting women seated behind a traditional wooden lattice in the Yoshiwara district of Tokyo.

This albumen silver print by Kusakabe Kimbei captures a specific social environment within the Yoshiwara district of Tokyo during the late nineteenth century. The image depicts a row of women seated behind a wooden lattice, a structure characteristic of the display areas in the licensed pleasure quarters of the period. The composition is defined by the rigid, vertical lines of the screen, which create a visual barrier between the subjects and the viewer.

Kusakabe Kimbei was a prominent figure in the development of Japanese photography, having apprenticed under Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried before establishing his own studio in Yokohama. His work often catered to the growing international interest in Japanese culture, producing images that were frequently hand-coloured for export. This particular photograph, however, retains its original monochromatic tone, offering a direct view of the architectural and social conditions of the Yoshiwara district.

The subjects are arranged in a uniform manner, each positioned behind a section of the lattice. Their presence is framed by the repetitive geometry of the wooden bars, which dominate the visual field. The lighting is soft, typical of the albumen process, which relies on egg whites to bind the photographic chemicals to the paper surface. This technique provides a subtle tonal range, allowing for the preservation of detail in the textures of the clothing and the wooden structure.

As a historical document, this print provides insight into the visual culture of the Meiji period. It reflects the intersection of traditional Japanese social structures and the emerging medium of photography. The work is representative of the studio practices of the era, where photographers documented both the scenic beauty of the country and the specific, often sequestered, aspects of urban life. The image remains a record of a vanished social space, captured through the lens of one of Japan's most prolific early photographers.
