Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist known for his paintings, graphic art, and illustrations. He began his artistic training as a wood engraver, later studying painting at the Académie Suisse and in the studio of Isidore Pils. Luce became associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement in the late 1880s, after encountering the work of Georges Seurat and Camille Pissarro. He exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants and participated in the eighth (and last) Impressionist exhibition in 1886. His work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and working-class subjects, reflecting his anarchist political beliefs. 'Quayside by the Seine in Paris' captures a bustling scene along the river. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands: the quayside in the foreground, the river with its bridges and boats in the middle ground, and the buildings of Paris in the background. This technique involved applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas, which then blend in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. Unlike Seurat, who sought a scientific precision, Luce used Pointillism to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life, particularly the industrial world. His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
Today, Luce's art appeals to collectors interested in works that combine aesthetic beauty with social consciousness.
