Gustave Doré, alongside journalist Blanchard Jerrold, documented the social conditions of the Victorian capital. The image depicts a group of sewer workers, colloquially known as 'sewer rats', who were responsible for the maintenance of the city's subterranean infrastructure.

Doré employs a stark, monochromatic palette to convey the grim reality of these labourers. The composition focuses on the physical presence of the men, who are shown with tools in hand, standing near an open manhole.
