This fragment originates from the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned by the city of Siena for its cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, the primary figure of the Sienese School, executed this work between 1308 and 1311. The Maestà was a double-sided construction, featuring numerous narrative panels that depicted the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. This specific scene captures the moment of the Renunciation of Peter, a narrative episode from the Passion cycle.
