Sommer, a German photographer who established a successful studio in Naples, became one of the most prolific documentarians of Italian archaeological sites. His work provided European audiences with a clear visual record of the excavations at Pompeii, which were then undergoing systematic study.
The composition follows a linear perspective, drawing the eye down the ancient paved street. The stone blocks of the road, worn by centuries of cart traffic, lead towards the horizon where a solitary pine tree stands against the sky. The ruins of the commercial and residential structures line both sides of the thoroughfare, revealing the skeletal remains of walls and doorways. Sommer utilised the natural light to create strong shadows, which define the texture of the volcanic stone and the depth of the excavated spaces.
