Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and his work represents the technical zenith of German engraving during the late fifteenth century. This print, depicting the Resurrection, demonstrates his ability to create complex narrative scenes within a restricted monochrome palette. The composition is organised around the central figure of Christ, who stands with one foot resting upon the edge of the sarcophagus. His posture is upright and calm, contrasting with the disarray of the soldiers surrounding the tomb.

Schongauer employs a variety of hatching techniques to define form and texture. The drapery of Christ's robe is rendered with fluid, curving lines that suggest weight and movement, while the armour of the soldiers is depicted with short, dense strokes to convey the metallic sheen of steel. The artist includes an angel positioned behind the tomb, holding a banner, which adds a vertical element that balances the horizontal weight of the stone lid and the reclining figures of the guards. The inclusion of the artist's monogram, M+S, at the bottom centre is a characteristic feature of his prints, marking his professional identity as a printmaker in Colmar.

This engraving reflects the Northern Renaissance interest in naturalistic detail combined with theological symbolism. The soldiers are shown in various states of surprise or slumber, their expressions and poses providing a human reaction to the miraculous event.
