This work is a section of the expansive fresco cycle located in the San Brizio Chapel of the Orvieto Cathedral. Luca Signorelli completed this commission between 1499 and 1502, demonstrating his preoccupation with the human form and anatomical precision. The scene depicts the moment of the resurrection, where figures emerge from the earth, transitioning from skeletal remains to fully realised human bodies.

Signorelli employs a clear, sculptural approach to the figures. Each body is rendered with muscular definition and dynamic movement, reflecting the artist's study of classical antiquity and his interest in the mechanics of the human physique. Above the rising figures, two winged angels hover in the sky, sounding trumpets to signal the event. They hold banners marked with the cross, providing a vertical anchor to the composition. The background features a golden, stippled sky, which contrasts with the earthy, pale tones of the figures below.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on ethereal or spiritualised depictions of the afterlife, Signorelli presents the resurrection as a physical, tangible process. The figures are shown in various states of transformation, from bone to flesh, interacting with one another in a crowded, active space. The composition is balanced, with the celestial figures framing the upper portion and the mass of humanity filling the lower register. This fresco remains a primary example of the artist's ability to combine theological narrative with a rigorous, almost scientific, observation of the human body. The work is noted for its influence on later artists, including Michelangelo, who studied these figures while preparing his own work for the Sistine Chapel.
