Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, painted this version of the biblical parable in the mid-seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the physical interaction between the father and his returning son. The son, depicted in a state of disarray, is being clothed by his father, who displays a weathered, empathetic expression.
