Jules Breton, a French painter associated with the Realist movement, focused his career on the depiction of rural life and agricultural labour. In this work, he captures the end of a working day in the fields. The composition features three figures, two of whom walk towards the viewer, carrying heavy loads upon their shoulders. The central figure holds a spade, her expression weary yet composed.

Breton employs a soft, atmospheric light to unify the scene. The sun, positioned low on the horizon, casts a golden glow across the field, creating long shadows and illuminating the dust kicked up by the workers. This lighting technique softens the harsh realities of manual labour, lending a sense of dignity to the subjects. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on the social struggles of the peasantry, Breton often presented a more harmonious view of rural existence.
