Description
A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting women in a domestic setting as part of a series reimagining classic landscape themes.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Eight Fashionable Views of the Parlor (Fūryū zashiki hakkei). The series playfully adapts the traditional Eight Views of Omi, a classic theme in East Asian art, by transposing these grand natural vistas into the domestic sphere of the Edo-period interior.
In this composition, Kiyonaga depicts two women engaged in daily tasks. One woman stands, using a ladle to draw water from a basin, while the other sits nearby, occupied with sewing or folding fabric. The title, Returning Sails of the Towel Rack, is a witty reference to the hanging cloths draped over a rack, which mimic the appearance of distant sails on a bay.
Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to integrate human subjects with their architectural surroundings. The print demonstrates his mastery of line and balanced composition. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted reds, and subtle greys to create a sense of calm. The architectural elements, such as the bamboo blind and the sliding wall panels, provide a structured grid that contrasts with the fluid, organic postures of the women.
This work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century. It captures a quiet, private moment, elevating mundane domestic activity to the status of a poetic subject. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section adds a layer of literary depth, connecting the visual image to the broader cultural traditions of the period. As a fine art print, this piece retains the delicate line work and subtle colour transitions characteristic of the original woodblock process.
