Description

A high-quality print of the leather-bound album cover from the Réunion des Tuileries au Louvre, featuring the gold-tooled imperial emblem of Napoleon III.

This image depicts the cover of the first volume of the Réunion des Tuileries au Louvre, a significant photographic project commissioned during the reign of Napoleon III. Édouard Denis Baldus, a photographer of German-French origin, was tasked with documenting the ambitious architectural project to connect the Tuileries Palace with the Louvre Museum. This connection was a major urban planning endeavour in mid-nineteenth-century Paris, intended to unify the royal residences and demonstrate the grandeur of the imperial regime.

The album cover itself is a fine example of Second Empire craftsmanship. Bound in deep green leather, the surface features gold-tooled ornamentation that reflects the formal aesthetic of the period. At the centre, the imperial coat of arms is rendered in gold, flanked by military motifs and surmounted by a crown. The corners are decorated with the letter N, a clear reference to the Emperor Napoleon III. The texture of the leather and the precision of the gold leaf application indicate the high status of the commission, as these albums were intended for presentation to the Emperor and other high-ranking officials.

Baldus is recognised for his technical mastery of large-format photography, particularly his work on architectural subjects and railway lines. While he is primarily known for his photographic prints, the presentation of his work in such elaborate volumes demonstrates the intersection of photography, bookbinding, and state propaganda. The album serves as a physical object of historical record, documenting the transformation of the Parisian urban fabric. The clean, symmetrical design of the cover mirrors the architectural order that the project sought to impose upon the city. This print captures the materiality of the original object, allowing for an appreciation of the historical design and the symbolic language employed by the imperial court to project authority and continuity.
