Description
A detailed photographic reproduction of the leather-bound, gold-embossed cover of the Réunion des Tuileries au Louvre album by Édouard Denis Baldus.
This image depicts the cover of the third volume of the Réunion des Tuileries au Louvre, a photographic project commissioned during the reign of Napoleon III. Édouard Denis Baldus, a photographer known for his architectural documentation, was tasked with recording the massive construction project that connected the Tuileries Palace to the Louvre Museum in Paris. The album cover itself is a piece of mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship, featuring a deep green leather binding with gold-leaf tooling.
The central motif is the imperial coat of arms, complete with the eagle of Napoleon III, surrounded by military trophies and topped with the imperial crown. In each corner, the letter N is embossed in gold, surmounted by a small crown, identifying the ownership and patronage of the French Emperor. The texture of the leather is visible, showing the grain and the physical wear of the object over time.
Baldus used the wet-collodion process to document the architectural progress of the site, but the presentation of these photographs was as important as the images themselves. These albums were intended for presentation to dignitaries and members of the imperial court. The design reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Second Empire, which favoured grand, formal displays of power and state-sponsored progress. The symmetry of the cover, combined with the precise placement of the gilded emblems, communicates the authority of the regime. This object serves as a record of the intersection between early industrial photography and the traditional luxury bookbinding arts of the period. It provides a glimpse into the material culture surrounding the documentation of Parisian urban renewal in the 1850s.
