François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, painted this work in 1734. It depicts a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem, Gerusalemme Liberata. The narrative follows the sorceress Armida, who intends to kill the crusader knight Rinaldo but finds herself captivated by his beauty, eventually choosing to abduct him to her enchanted garden instead.

Boucher employs a light, pastel-heavy palette characteristic of his mature style. The composition is structured around the central figures, with Armida seated in a state of semi-undress, gazing into a mirror held by a putto. Rinaldo, still clad in partial armour, kneels before her, his posture suggesting a transition from warrior to lover. The background features classical architectural elements and lush foliage, which frame the figures and create a sense of theatrical artifice. The presence of multiple putti adds to the playful, decorative quality typical of mid-eighteenth-century French court art.

Technically, the painting demonstrates Boucher's facility with soft, fluid brushwork and his ability to render textures, from the metallic sheen of the armour to the delicate drapery of the fabrics. The lighting is diffuse, avoiding harsh shadows to maintain the dreamlike atmosphere of the scene.
