The narrative follows the sorceress Armida, who discovers the crusader knight Rinaldo sleeping on a deserted island. Initially intent on vengeance for the loss of her prisoners, Armida is overcome by the knight's beauty and finds her anger replaced by affection. Audran, a master of the burin, translates the painterly qualities of the original composition into a precise system of lines and cross-hatching.

The composition centres on the dramatic tension between the two figures. Rinaldo lies in a state of vulnerable repose, his armour providing a contrast to the softness of his form. Armida leans over him, her posture conveying a mix of hesitation and sudden emotional shift. A small putto assists her, holding her arm as she prepares to strike, yet the gesture is arrested by her internal conflict. The background features a simplified natural setting, with trees framing the figures and a distant horizon line that provides depth to the scene.

Audran was a prolific printmaker in the seventeenth century, known for his ability to reproduce the works of major painters for a wider audience.
