This miniature, attributed to the French master Jean Fouquet, originates from a manuscript of the Grandes Chroniques de France. Fouquet, active in the mid-fifteenth century, is recognised for his ability to integrate Italianate perspective with the meticulous detail characteristic of Northern European illumination. The composition is divided into two distinct zones by a classical architectural column, a device that allows the artist to present simultaneous narratives.

On the left, the interior scene depicts King Robert the Pious within a vaulted space, positioned behind an altar. He is engaged in the act of filing an antiphon, a liturgical chant. The figures surrounding him are rendered with precise attention to the textures of their garments, showcasing the fashion of the period through varied colours and silhouettes. The use of gold leaf and deep pigments provides a sense of material weight to the ecclesiastical setting.

To the right, the scene shifts to an exterior view of a fortified castle situated beside a river. This section introduces a military element, with archers positioned in the foreground, their bows drawn.
